...Nella Last's War, which is the diaries of 'Housewife 49' (who it turns out, probably was 49 at some point in the story after all. I am easily confused!) written for the Mass Observation project during the war.
If anyone is interested in Mass Observation and the Mass Observation Archive, their website is here. There is some general info about the history of Mass Observation and, of course, how Mass Observation is continuing today.

Hi
How was the discussion last night - I am really sorry that I wasn't there.
This looks very interesting. See you at the next one!
Although a little distracted by the delicious pizza, we had a good discussion. It seemed that most of us had a love-hate relationship with the book. General feelings were along similar themes with confusion and unfulfillment contrasting with flashes of elegant prose and insightful ideas and concepts. Also, what role did the translator have in all this? The strongest feeling was a resentment at the publisher for printing an extremely misleading synopsis on the back cover!
